THE BOX FORM

I have used the box form for 49 years to create constructions/assemblages in a wide variety of media and content. In my early 20’s I visited a museum of highly detailed doll houses in New York City. The detail fascinated me. I also visited China Town in San Francisco and discovered very small intricately carved landscapes in boxes and very small ceramic figurines. Then I started looking at Asian art in museums and was intrigued by small stone carvings of people. I loved how the small scale could draw you into a different environment or world. Who were they and what did they do? When I started working “small” it freed me to imagine what could exist in a life-size scale, realistically or abstractly.
